In the beginning of 1944 during the invasion of Italy the Allies found there advance stalled halfway between Naples and Rome. It was there, centered on the ancient Benedictine monastery of Monte Cassino that the Germans constructed a line of fortifications called the Gustav line. Over the next 5 months one of the bloodiest battles of WWII raged in the mountains and towns that surrounded the monastery. Through the personal stories of men from the American, British and Polish divisions that fought there, "Monte Cassino: The Road to Rome" tells the harrowing tale of the struggle that became known as the the Battle of Monte Cassino
